How to Find the Smallest, Lightest Camping Chair

The smallest and lightest camping chair is the one that gives you the lowest packed weight and smallest folded size while still providing a seat that fits you safely. There is no single best answer for every camper: a chair that is easy to carry on a backpacking trip may sit lower to the ground or feel less roomy than one you would choose for a campsite.

If you will carry your chair for miles, start with its total packed weight, including any frame pieces and carry bag, then consider whether its folded shape fits comfortably in or on your pack. If you are packing a car trunk or storing gear in a small apartment, folded length and overall bulk may matter more than saving a little weight.

Before choosing the most compact option, consider seat height, seat width, and how easily you can get in and out of the chair; a very low seat may not suit everyone. Make sure the chair’s stated weight capacity accommodates you and anything you expect to hold while seated, and use it on stable, reasonably level ground.

Lightweight designs often use a fabric seat supported by a folding frame, so take a moment to assemble the chair fully and seat each connection before use. Our featured Ultralight Folding Camping Chair guide can help you think through that portability trade-off; after a trip, clean and dry your chair before storing it to help care for its fabric and frame.
